What is the difference between regular and espresso brewing coffee?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

I looked up a latte recipe and it calls for espresso coffee but I have just regular Folgers coffee.

In a Nutshell? Espresso is ground much more fine than regular folgers coffee. It is then "Tamped" (Or compacted slightly) and hot water is forced through the grounds, to create a much stronger, darker type coffee. This is what is used in coffee house drinks such as lattes cappuccinos and such.

You can purchase a home espresso machine from a store (walmart/kohls etc…), and with a little practice, you too will be able to make a mean mocha!

How much energy is used to produce a disposable coffee cup, such as a Tim Horton’s cup?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

A coffee cup has two parts – the lid and the cup itself. The cups I am interested in have a layer of polyethylene to make them more heat resistant. I am looking for answers to figure out the amount of energy needed to manufacture the cup for an environmental project. Please do not worry about the lid.

There’s a chart on p.5 you might find useful.

What are some innovative business ideas for a coffee shop?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Hi there! I need some innovative business ideas for a coffee shop, what would be some good ones? Any examples from successful coffee shop chains? Your help would be really appreciated..Thank you!

Well, if I were to open a coffee shop I would offer donuts, danishes, bagels, and alcohol in the coffee. The counter seats should be the tip-free seats. The tables should contain coffee menus and be spacious enough for business meetings or students and their books.

I love coffee. I drink it more than I drink beer. So, you know I love it.

You should offer a variety of major brands, not just one. For instance, you should have Maxwell House as well as Folgers. You should also offer it to be purchased by the pitcher and have your own custom-made napkins. You should also have custom-designed to-go cups.

Most importantly, you need a good menu, so that the customer sits down and decides what coffee he wants. You could also sell custom-made coffee mugs, and coffee by the pack to bring home. If you make it big like Starbucks from my suggestions, send me a coffee shop gift card.

One last thought I just had before submitting my suggestion is, there should be coffee shops that offer varieties of teas as well. There are a lot of tea drinkers out there.

Also, you should consider cold coffee and cold tea for the warm seasons.

Best wishes for your success!

How many pots of coffee do you get from 1 pound of coffee?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

We currently have one of those large coffee pots in our office, so we get I’d say between 8-10 cups of coffee per pot. We currently have Peet’s French Roast (nasty) and we usually put about 3-4 scoops in the coffee filter which is a regular sized coffee filter (flat). I honestly have no idea how many pots we get out of each 1 pound bag because many people make coffee here in our office. How many pots would you say you’d get from 1 pound of ground coffee?

Not sure of the exact size of your coffee pot, cups, or measuring spoon, however 40 oz of water will yeild approximately seven 6 oz cups of coffee. One half ounce of fresh ground coffee which is approximately 4 heaping tablespoons of coffee will give you a good tasting coffee (not too strong). You should get about 30 pots per pound of coffee. I’ve never heard of Peet’s coffee but if it’s that nasty tasting your office should consider some flavored coffees for a treat. Who wants to start the day on lousy tasting coffee!
