I’m a Canon swag collector, anything from pens to ice scrapers, if it says Canon, I want to own it. When photos of this thermal travel mug modeled around the F4L lens appears on the ‘net after the Olympic games, I had to have one. Luckily, I was able to nab two samples from my camera store – www.carsand.com Rumor has it they’ll be available for $29.99 soon.

Calculating enthalpy in a coffee cup calorimetry?

March 9th, 2010

A total of 2.00 mol of a compound is allowed to react in a foam coffee cup that contains 192 g of water. The reaction caused the temperature of the water to rise from 21.0 to 24.7 degrees C. What is the enthalpy of this reaction? Assume that no heat is lost to the surroundings or to the coffee cup itself.

Specific heat capacity of water c = 4.18 J/g-K
Heat released = m * c * (t2 – t1)
= 192 x 4.18 x (24.7 – 21.0)
= 2969.472 J
Number of moles = 2.00
Therefore enthalpy = 2969.472/2.00 J/mol
= 1485 J/mol
= 1.485 kJ/mol
Ans: 1.485 kJ/mol

Note: I used specific heat capacity of water = 4.18 J/g-K. Some authors use slightly different value. Use the value given in your book.
